An old brittle fracture on a the base of a stanchion. Probably caused by snagging the stanchion when coming alongside or some other sudden impact.

Cracked / broken ribs are common on old craft like these. Not a problem if replaced, although in this case, there was evidence of impact damage. The yacht had probably fallen on its bilge whilst ashore.

An ‘interesting’ repair to this stern gland.

This was an owner built steel craft. The fit of the plates to keel  were poor and the gaps had been filled with weld.

The rubbing strake on this motor cruiser showed significant crazing at three points on the stern. Most likely this has been caused by impact with a pontoon through being badly moored stern on.

The staining on the bunk cushion and the discolouration of the cabin sides all point to a long term leak with associated rot.

The final report you receive will be between 10 - 30 pages, be fully illustrated and will also help you come to an informed decision regarding the asking price.

Condition Reports

Condition reports are generally asked for by insurance companies, or by owners at the end of the season so that they can plan their winter maintenance programme.

A single cracked rib like this is not a problem but it does need attention. Either doubling or preferably replacing.
The engine and gearbox was fine.
The wiring just needed tidying up.

Many insurance companies will ask for a condition report if your craft is over fifteen years old and you are taking out insurance for the first time, or it has been in excess of five years since the last condition report.

Condition reports really need to be undertaken with the craft out of the water. Although as moisture readings on GRP craft are not usually taken for insurance reports, (they are for owner requested condition reports), unless specifically requested, or there is evidence of osmosis requiring treatment, the craft may be surveyed as soon as it is slipped or craned out.

Whilst covering all the aspects that a Pre-Purchase report covers, for insurance purposes, the emphasis of the report is on those items that affect the craft’s safety and seaworthiness.

This prop shaft showed evidence of considerable corrosion pitting and scoring and was leading to a dangerous level of vibration and associated stern gland leaking

The Condition report will identify all areas that require work and recommend the way the work should be undertaken.
Few insurance companies ask for another survey to confirm the work has been undertaken. Instead, they make the completion of the work a condition of the insurance being valid.

Condition reports for insurance companies will usually include a market valuation and the original of the report is generally sent directly to the insurance company with a copy being sent to the owner.

Damage Reports

Damage reports are generally focused on commenting on the extent, nature and implications of the damage, although all areas that might be affected by the damage are commented on.

The best damage reports are based on the fullest background information, so the more information you are able to supply us with prior to Yacht and Boat Surveys Ltd commencing the report with respect to the background to the incident, the better report we will be able to produce for you.

The report will set out:-
  • - The damage caused, both immediate and resultant.
  • - The implications of the damage.
  • - Recommendations as to necessary and effective repairs.
  • - An indication of likely costs .

The pulpit on this day motor boat was severely damaged by impact with a much larger craft. ‘Fortunately’ the pulpit was of such light construction and fixing that it distorted and broke away without damaging the deck.

The ‘P’ bracket on this yacht started to break away after the prop hit a baulk of timber and the shaft bent.
