Yacht and Boat Surveys Ltd aim to provide you with the best possible service. There are vital parts you can play to help us achieve this.
Owner’s Permission: If you are requesting a pre-purchase survey, then you must get permission from the owner. In order to cover ourselves, Yacht and Boat Surveys Ltd must contact the current owner prior to commencing the survey and obtain their written permission to ‘set foot’ on their property. This does not mean that we give the current owners a copy of the survey. The survey is the property of the person instructing us.
Hull Inspection:-
A comprehensive inspection of the hull and underwater sections can only be carried out if the craft is ashore ! Seems obvious, but it can get overlooked. Equally for moisture readings to be meaningful, the craft must have been out of the water for 4 – 5 days.
| | Surveying this 1969 Macwester 26 on her mooring would not be very satisfactory.
|
We can, pending a risk assessment, carry out a survey with the craft ‘in slings’ and whilst it is very useful if the bottom has been pressure washed prior to our survey, please do not use the intervening time to re- antifoul.
 | Within assessed limits, we can carry out a survey with the craft ‘in slings’, but it is by no means ideal. |
Personal Items:- It’s best if personal items or gear that is not part of the craft and its associated systems is removed. If nothing else, it is difficult to survey lockers and under bunks and cabin soles if they are crammed full of personal items.
Items Removed:- If items such as life rafts or flares have been removed, please make us aware of this.
Existing Problems / Issues / Damage you are aware of:- Our aim is to provide you with the best survey we can that meets your needs. It is tremendously helpful to us if you tell us about any problems, defects or areas of concern that you know about. The more background information you give us, the better survey we will be able to undertake for you. If there is damage or repair / replacement work that you have in hand, then please let us know. If a life raft is damaged and you are aware of it we will still comment on it in our report, but in not so much detail. | This 1978 Oyster 37 is in an ‘ideal’ setting. If the mast had been unstepped it would have been even better. | Paperwork:- If you have paper work relating to the history of your craft, please make it available to us. This includes items such as specification of equipment and manuals. General Arrangements:- Make sure the yard or broker know we are going to be carrying out a survey on your behalf. Confirm all the details related to lift-out or perhaps sea trials and very importantly, make sure we know the location of the craft and have full details of it. | A superb example of a lovingly cared for craft, but undertaking the survey would not be easy!
| Survey Instructions:- Make sure you have confirmed your instructions to us and included your payment as per the contract with your return. Keys:- Make sure we have, or will have access to all keys, not just those to the hatch. Systems:- Batteries should be charged up, instruments connected and water systems and gas should be ready to be tested.
